Wendy Johnsons holds a B.A. in Elementary Education with a Spanish minor from the University of Northern Colorado and a Master’s in Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Hamline University. Wendy has a lifetime of teaching experience ranging from K-12, ESL, GED, ABE and college tutoring as well as teaching grammar, composition, and rhetoric at Hennepin Technical College as a member of the English Faculty since 2015. In addition, as a parent of two highly gifted and talented children and active in the Minnesota Council for Gifted and Talented network for many years, she has extensive experience and a deep understanding of gifted and talented and “twice exceptional” (2e) children and adults. She recognizes and celebrates their unique strengths and challenges. Wendy is passionate about one-on-one skills coaching and seeing each student’s confidence soar with their stronger powers to think and communicate.
Outside of teaching, Wendy was a writer in the Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare Communications Department and is an awarding-winning published author of non-fiction and fiction and a 2014 Minnesota State Arts Board grant recipient. Her writing has appeared in Great Potential, the publication of The National Association for Gifted Children and literary journals among other local and national publications. Her book, Life with Gifted Children: Infinity & Zebra Stripes, published by Great Potential Press, shares her journey in advocating for her children’s education along with practical and insightful wisdom.
Born and raised in Minnesota, Wendy spent a year as a Rotary high school exchange student in Bolivia and lived in Colorado for five years before returning to the Minneapolis area to raise a family. Her empty nest is now occupied by Georgie, her Pembroke corgi.
